Based on Michelangelo\\\'s Pieta\\\' of Mary and the Christ, which symbolizes the sacrifice made for Human \\\"Spiritual\\\" Liberty; this sculpture stands as America\\\'s symbol honoring the sacrifices made for Human \\\"Physical\\\" Liberty.\r\nIn this sculpture by James N. Muir, Mary has become Lady Liberty with the classical warrior lying in her arms. His shield bears the crest of the United States of America; his helmet is that of Athena, Goddess of War. The Sword of Truth and Justice that has slain tyrants, is taken from his grasp by \\\"Liberty\\\" to be passed on to the next courageous warrior who will step forward to take his honored place in the phalanx of Freedom...\r\n\r\n\\\"Oh stranger, go tell the free that\r\nhere we lie, obedient to their commands\\\"\r\n\r\nThis Memorial is dedicated to \\\"All American Soldiers\\\" who have died in the never-ending battle to make men free...

This response humbled Peter and prompted him to return to Rome to confront the persecution and his own eventual death by crucifixion.\r\n

Fleeing before the storm clouds of war, a little refugee girl, herself still merely a child, gives comfort and reassurance to her own doll-child.\r\n\r\n[They are on a street corner somewhere in Europe fleeing before the Nazis or the Allies; in Spain or Italy fleeing before the Fascists; in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, or the Far East fleeing before the Communists; in the Middle East fleeing before the Moslems, or U.N. \\\"Peacekeepers;\\\" in Albania, Rumania, Azebaijan, Russia, Bosnia or Chechnya fleeing before the Socialists: and in Africa, Asia, Central America, Haiti or America fleeing before the Tyranny of poverty and oppression.]*\r\n\r\nThrough it all, she reflects the uncertain innocence and trust of all little children inheriting a world not of their making, yet, filled with the hope of creating a better future for themselves and for their own \\\"war-child\\\'s\\\" children.\\\"\r\n

A Newsboy from the past heralding in a new era; a little David armed with the unerring pebble of TRUTH to do battle against Goliath of Falsehood.\r\n Notes:\r\n The slingshot in his hip pocket, so appropriate to a little David, serves as a warning of the unerring accuracy of well-directed Truth. The front page photo of the Newsboy holding up the headline of \\\"Truth!\\\" mirrors the theme to infinity as a pebble creates infinite ripples in a pond.\r\n\r\n\\\"Men stumble over Truth from time to time but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.\\\"\r\n\r\n\\\"………and a child shall lead them.\\\"\r\n \r\n

\r\n\r\n10\\\" high studies also available\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis sculpture is of a Spanish Colonial horse which exemplifies living history at its best! It is a breed of horse that dates back to 1493, which arrived in the New World with the Conquistadors. Father Kino introduced the breed into every mission he established from Mexico across the southwest and throughout California. A rich and long history, with only the hardiest surviving over the years. They were thought to be extinct at different times. In 1885, American settlers introduced these horses into the West. By 1920 they were indeed faced with extinction. A small, documented herd remained tucked away and forgotten in southern Arizona at the Wilbur-Cruce Ranch. This ranch was purchased by the Nature Conservancy on behalf of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1989. In January 1990, a movement was spearheaded to protect this herd and increase its size. The history of the Wilbur-Cruce herd is one that cannot be duplicated. No other herd of Spanish-descended horses can be traced with the accuracy of the Cruce herd. These horses are the purest of the original breed and considered the strongest, sturdiest and most distance capable horse breeds. They have been referred to as \\\"rock horses\\\" by the Indians because of their ability in difficult terrains and it has been said that they have a keener intelligence and a \\\"dog-like\\\" loyalty to their masters.\r\n This was the type of horse still being ridden in the early 1900\\\'s by the people throughout the West. It is the horse chosen by Muir for this 1920\\\'s era sculpture commissioned by the Sheriff\\\'s office for the center of Phoenix. Muir has owned one of these magnificent horses named \\\"Diamante\\\'\\\". The saddle and equipment featured in the sculpture are also from this era and historically correct. There are small herds privately owned and available today. These individuals are keeping this breed alive and also enabling, through selective breeding, some of the original Spanish \\\"Barb\\\" characteristics to be re-established in the Barb breed, as well.\r\n \r\n

\\\". . . And Justice For All\\\" To the people, justice is an ideal, not an instrument of Power. To the people justice is as Justinian defined it-\\\"the firm and continuous desire to render to everyone that which is his due.\\\" But the legal system is not predominantly attentive to notions of equality and the rights of the individual. The legal system is concerned instead with law, and law is pledged to Power. As a consequence, law will most often stand against such human rights as threaten Power. The virulence of Power is not the question. By reason of Power\\\'s preoccupation with its own goals, all Power tends to function as if the system were designed to destroy the individual, for Power, by definition, can never permit itself to be subordinated to the individual. As a consequence, justice will be delivered to the people only when it is in the best interests of Power to deliver it.\\\"\r\n\r\n1989 Gerry Spence

\\\"\\\'Cornerstones of Freedom\\\" symbolizes the foundation stone upon which the building of human liberty has been erected under the all-seeing eye of God. Guided by the twin figures of Liberty and Justice, the greatest documents of freedom in modern history are immortalized for all posterity. England\\\'s Magna Carta, America\\\'s Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights all affirm the inalienable God-given Rights of humankind. These documents attest to the indisputable fact that governments are instituted among men for the sole purpose of protecting such pre-existing rights and liberties of the people in order to assure the common good of all. Rights derive from God not from governments. Any attempts to convert rights to privileges places Liberty and Justice either subject to the fickle whim of political expediency or within the iron grip of tyranny.

\r\n\r\n\\\"Fences!\\\", a portrait of an early cowboy taking a break from \\\"working the fence line.\\\" with canteen of water to slake his thirst and trusty lantern to light his way through the approaching darkness, except for this occasional respite to look back on progress and forward on future - his labors are without end.\r\n Symbolically, the allegory runs much deeper. Today, as in the old west, fences represent exclusion and limitation, equally for those on either side, restricting our perspectives to certain cherished beliefs. Now, as then, the greater need is to cut those fences, rather than to string anew. This cowboy is prepared: clothed for stormy weather, with spurs to ride hard and swift, chaps to ward off the thorns and brambles of adversity, quirt to lash out of the way the nay-sayers, do-nothings, and sycophants of negativity. Guided by the Lantern\\\'s Light and armed only with the sharp knife of truth and the incisiveness of his fencing tool, like the little David of old, he is still the battle against the Goliath of Falsehood. He stands four-square upon the Rock of Truth- the world will adjust.\r\n \r\n\r\nIn keeping with his deep spiritual convictions and social consciousness, Muir\\\'s sculptural subjects have expanded to reflect the critical nature of the times in which we live. James N. Muir was born in Indianapolis, Indiana 1945. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point for one and a half years and completed his B.S. Degree at Indiana University in 1970, while also having served six years in both the U.S. Army and Air Force. His professional art career as a sculptor began in Sedona, Arizona 1980 where he has continued to be a full-time professional artist for the past three decades. He owned his own bronze casting foundry, Seraph M Fine Art Bronze, from 1982 to 1988 in Sedona, Arizona. He has completed over 100 sculptures to date, with over 60 lifesize monumental sculptures placed in public locations across the country and abroad.
Allegorical Art is a term Muir uses to describe his art as being filled with symbolic meaning. Bridging the centuries from his historical military subjects to today's social, political and spiritual commentary, his sculptures speak eloquently of Duty, Honor, Courage, and Justice, but above all, of Truth and the ultimate triumph of the Human Spirit. He has built upon the recognition gained initially as an historical military sculptor to create an ever-expanding array of artistic commentary exemplifying the highest qualities of man.
Muir's early interest in history and the military was reinforced by his experiences as a West Point cadet and to which he also attributes the cementing of his personal "Code of Honor." Muir's ever-deeper involvement with horses, and his continuing quest for spiritual Truth, led him to Arizona in 1979 for the freedom and inspiration of the great American West. He ultimately settled in Sedona, Arizona and there embarked on a full-time career in sculpting, initially specializing in historical subjects. In 1990 he began to expand his work to include contemporary subjects and accepting commissions in lifesize and monumental.
His meticulous attention to detail, coupled with an insightful grasp of the human experience resulted in exquisitely crafted and poignant bronzes. He quickly gained the acclaim of collectors around the country. Some of the public collections Muir's work resides include: West Point Military Academy in New York, U.S. Cavalry Museum at Fort Riley, Booth Museum in Georgia, Birkenau Museum at Auschwitz, St. Louis University, Gettysburg Battlefield Museum, Vanguard University, GOW School, Pearce Western Art Museum, Sons of The American Revolution Headquarters, University of Arizona, Atlanta Historical Society, Paul Harvey News Broadcasting Headquarters, George W. Bush, Sr. office, and some of the most prominent private collections in America.
One long-term goal realized, was Muir's first book, "Lanterns Along The Path", published in 2004 with a second printing in 2005. The book was chosen to be offered nationwide by Barnes & Noble. A labor of love, Muir spent nearly seven years writing the book that showcases all of his sculptures with a flowing narrative which addresses the spirit of the human journey. The book is already being recognized as its own work of art: Muir received the "2004 Pinnacle Book Achievement Award" in the Inspirational Category.
Another goal also achieved in 2005 was the founding of "The Human Liberty ARTT Foundation", (ARTT-Artistic Responsibility To Truth), whose mission is To proclaim and promote Human Liberty through the Arts and Education, place sculptures and monuments to Courage, Hope, and Freedom around the world, publish related books, present an annual art scholarship, and a "Human Liberty Award".
In keeping with his deep spiritual convictions and social consciousness, Muir's sculptural and philanthropic works reflect the critical nature of the times in which we live. Whether historical or contemporary, "The golden thread that ties it all together is still his never-ending quest for the essence of life - for Truth in its purest form."
"Allegorical Art" is a term James Muir uses to describe his work, which is filled with symbology to help create a heightened social, political and spiritual awareness. "The allegorical symbolism in my sculptures bridges the centuries of history to make contemporary statements about the human condition, in order to exemplify the highest qualities of man. My work speaks of Duty, Honor, Courage, Liberty and Justice, but above all, it speaks of Truth and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit".
Muir's subjects matter ranges from historical subjects, to today's contemporary issues. Whatever subject that is used, the golden thread that ties it all together is still a never-ending quest for the essence of life - for truth in its purest form.
Originally sculpted in clay, his sculptures are cast in bronze using the classical :Lost Wax" process. Mr. Muir is available for lectures and/or for workshops to teach the "Use of Symbolism" in Creating Allegorical Art.
